Nantucket Kits Lightship CollectionThe lightship baskets are an extension of Nate's Gold Collection©. All their parts are made of New England Ash , as were many of the original early baskets woven on the lightships where the tradition started. The earliest Nantuckets, those made on the lightship and those made on the Island in the period preceding WWII were made with wooden staves. The use of cane staves became popular after the lightship era in the island baskets. Nate's Lightship Collection© is made with wooden staves, handles, rims and bases, giving them an authenticity offered by no other kit maker. Nate's traditional wooden rims make a much more ridged basket than the commonly used reed rims of today. Using these wooden rims Nate gets a much more delicate look and yet a stronger basket. Nate's wooden staves for these basket kits come already tapered, edges beveled and sanded to perfection. Because of the technique used in cutting them from the tree these staves bend easily with just warm water and remove the difficulties normally associated with wooden staved Nantuckets. Lightship KitsNOTE: The "Lightship kits" include all ash wooden parts including rims and tapered ash staves. The cane weavers, all hardware and written illustrated instructions are included. Bone dressings are an option and are not included. It does not include any mold that might be needed. Molds are purchased separately. 1/2 Lightship KitsThe "Lightship 1/2 kits" include only the following ash wooden parts: base, handle, rims and tapered staves. No weaving materials, hardware, plan or mold is included.
