Shaker Basketry
The shakers were well known for among
many things their simplicity of design and fine quality manufacturing.
They started a sale industry at the turn of the nineteenth century
that set new standards in quality of design and manufacture for
American Basketry.
Our History with Shaker Basketry or Rebirthing a
Lost Art
We started when the Shaker basket
experience was lost. With the Shaker Eldress' help and kindness
the Basket Shop started on its journey of discovery. The Shop
got its start at Canterbury Shaker Village in the late 1970's. A
ten-year research and trial-and-error self-apprenticeship culminated
in the rebirth of Shaker Basketry as it once was. The book,
"Shaker Baskets", by Martha Wetherbee and Nathan Taylor, documented
the Shaker's basket making history and gave credit to their once lost
legacy.
The Basket Shop staff went on to spread
the lost art; teaching and supplying new Shaker basket makers coast to
coast over the past twenty years.
The division of the original Shop after
the first twenty-five years has left a gap in its offerings.
Today, Nathan Taylor begins to offer the Shaker basket making
experience once again through this new website and his shaker basket
line.
The Basket Shop now resides in Warner,
NH. Here the Shop makes baskets, kits, parts, and teaches Shaker
basketry. It is conveniently located to the Shaker villages of
Canterbury and Enfield. Also, Warner itself is the location of
the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum, which houses a wonderful collection
if Indian baskets and artifacts.
The Basket Shop invites you to partake
in a Shaker Basket Class and visit the Shaker and Indian Museums when
in New Hampshire.
Also, the Basket Shop invites you to
purchase your own copy of
"Shaker Baskets", by Martha Wetherbee and Nathan Taylor.
We have recently had it reprinted. It also makes a great
Christmas gift! Just click on "Publications" below to see all of
the books that we currently offer, including
